Why Cleaning Your Child’s Ears Is Important

Our ears have their own cleaning system, which is the first thing to note. Yes, you read that correctly! Our body produces sebum in the ears, which helps catch dirt and bacteria. This natural process protects our ears and keeps the eardrums healthy. However, sometimes dirt or wax can accumulate on the outer ear, and that’s where you, as a parent, can help protect your child from potential ear infections.

Things to avoid:

There is a common myth among people that to clean kids' ears, you have to grab an ear cleaning tool and clean their kid’s ear with it, which is a thing you must avoid doing. Do not put any object inside their ears to clean, as this can push wax deeper, cause irritation, or even damage the eardrum. Instead, follow the steps shared below:

Safe and Simple Tips to Clean Your Child’s Ears

1. Clean the Outer Ear

  • Use a soft, damp wash cloth to gently wipe the outer area of their ear during bath time. Focus on cleaning behind the ears and the folds where dirt can hide.
  • Gently dry the area with a clean towel to prevent moisture buildup.

2. Try Warm Olive Oil for Dry Wax Buildup

  • If you notice excess wax, a few drops of mild warm (not hot!) olive oil can help soften it. Tilt your child’s head and use a dropper to apply the oil. Just add some drops of oil into the ear. Let it sit for a minute or two, then wipe away any softened wax that comes out naturally.
  • Always make sure to check the oil temperature by putting it over the hand so that it won't hurt.

3. Avoid Ear Candles or Wax

  • You might have heard about ear candles, but they’re not safe for kids (or adults, really). They can cause burns and don’t effectively remove wax.

4. Use Over-the-Counter Ear Drops (If Needed)

  • Some ear drops are made to safely lose wax, make sure you consult a doctor first before you choose any drops for your child. As they will suggest appropriate drop for your child's age and problem.

5. Clean After Swimming

  • Kids who are active in swimming may experience pain and irritation in their ears due to long exposure to water in their ears. Just wipe their ears with a towel by tilting their head so that the towel absorbs the excess water and makes it easier for the water to drain out after swimming.

When to See a Doctor

Sometimes, ear issues need professional care. Watch for these signs that it’s time to consult an ear's expert doctor:

  • Persistent ear pain
  • Hearing difficulties
  • Discharge from the ear (other than wax)
  • A foul smell coming from the ear

Your doctor can safely remove wax or address any underlying issues without risking damage to the ear. If, let's say, any object has gone into the ear of your child, make your child lie down so that it will not go inside, and immediately go to a doctor.

Summary

It's not very complicated or difficult to keep your child's ears clean. It's just following easy steps to make your child have clean ears and listen to everything clearly. Make sure you clean the outer area of the ear, and make sure to avoid putting any object inside your kid's ear for cleaning. While also following the above shared steps, you can maintain your child's ear hygiene without any hassle.
